A study has developed a diagnostic tool for sarcoidosis, a chronic inflammatory illness characterized by the growth of small lumps known as granulomas in the lungs and other organs, which can be used to detect the condition swiftly and economically. The technology, which uses a simple blood test, may enable the use of more intrusive diagnostic methods, which are commonly employed to selectively detect illnesses. The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine issued a report on the results.

“Currently, diagnosing sarcoidosis isn’t a straightforward process and requires tissue removal and testing with additional screenings to rule out other diseases, such as tuberculosis or lung cancer,” said James Kiley, Ph.D., director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s Division of Lung Diseases.

“Using a blood test will help diagnose faster, particularly in those organs that are more challenging to biopsy and with less harm to the patient.”

Although the exact cause of sarcoidosis is unknown, experts believe it is an immunological condition triggered by a specific collection of antigens, which are typically foreign particles that stimulate the body to generate an immune response. According to previous research, there are 8-11 sarcoidosis cases per 100,000 people in the United States per year. Scientists collected blood and lung fluid samples from patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis, isolated the genetic material, and found antigens associated with sarcoidosis.
